Vitamins and Supplement Links

Listen to Granpa! The term vitamin is derived from the words vital and amine. Vitamins are required for life and were originally thought to be amines. Today it is understood that not all vitamins are amines, they are organic compounds required by humans in small or trace amounts. These are normally absorbed through the gut but can be introduced by injection or transdermally. An organic compound is considered a vitamin if a lack of that compound in the diet results in overt symptoms of the element deficiency.

Vitamins are chemicals in food clinically conspicuous by their absence. - RICHARD GORDON

"It is now known that all these diseases, with the exception of pellagra, can be prevented and cured by the addition of preventive substances; the deficient substances, which are of the nature of organic bases, we will call "vitamines" - CASIMIR FUNK
